A collection of four distinct performing ensembles, the Southeastern orchestra department provides students with a vibrant music education and the opportunity to prepare and perform a wide variety of music for our community.
The Hamilton Southeastern Symphony Orchestra is the premiere orchestra of Hamilton Southeastern High School. Its members are primarily outstanding upperclassman string musicians and a select number of outstanding underclassman and is by audition only. This advanced ensemble is driven by a professional rehearsal and performance philosophy, geared at inspiring young musicians to perform meaningful and exciting orchestra literature spanning several musical time periods at the highest level possible. The HSSYO has developed a standard of excellence, earning top ratings at state festivals and contests. Its performance season during each school year experiences innovative programming and collaboration with other top ensembles at HSEHS. Student musicians in this orchestra have achieved gold ratings at ISSMA state solo and ensemble contests and performed in youth orchestras such as the New World Youth Orchestra. Students in the HSSYO are expected to be involved in private lessons and working toward mastery. Students in the HSSYO understand that there will be after school rehearsals in the Spring to prepare for ISSMA State Qualifications. Directors continue, as always, to work with students to balance orchestra rehearsals with athletics and other after school commitments to ensure a well-rounded education. Students participating in the HSSYO are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music through the orchestra, which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Instruction is designed so that students can to connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine, and integrate music study into other subject areas. Additionally, the curriculum is designed to develop elements of musicianship including, but not limited to: (1) tone production, (2) technical skills, (3) intonation, (4) music reading skills, (5) listening skills, (6) analyzing music, and (7) studying historically significant styles of literature. Experiences include, but are not limited to, improvising, conducting, playing by ear, and sight-reading.
The Hamilton Southeastern Serenata Orchestra is an audition only course, comprised primarily of upper level ability upperclassman string musicians and a select number of upper level ability underclassman. A primary function of this course is to prepare students to move into the Symphony Orchestra. While participating in the HSSO, students will develop the ability to understand and convey the composer's intent in order to connect the performer with the audience. Students are expected to perform, with expression and technical accuracy, a large and varied repertoire of orchestra literature. Evaluation of music and music performances is included. The HSSO provides young string musicians the opportunity to develop their abilities and musicianship and become musical leaders in the ensemble. Students are provided with opportunities to experience live performances by professionals, during and outside of the school day. This ensemble performs a wide variety of music during the year, performing several concerts. Students will be expected to commit to the occasional after school or Pathway rehearsals, as well as 3-5 performances throughout the year. Students participating in the HSSO are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music through the orchestra, which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. The Hamilton Southeastern Philharmonic Orchestra a audition only course for string musicians in grades 10-12. One of the primary purposes for the HSPO is to create a space for intermediate string students with varying levels of playing ability. Students in the HSPO have minimal after school commitments and will only be expected to participate in 2-3 performances throughout the year. The majority of work for this ensemble happens during class. This HSPO performs a wide variety of music during the year. Students are also provided with opportunities to experience live performances by professionals, during and outside of the school day. Students participating in the HSPO are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music through the orchestra, which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Instruction is designed so that students can to connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine, and integrate music study into other subject areas. A primary function of the HSCO is to cultivate a culture of respect and understanding to prepare students for the Serenata and Symphony Orchestras in their later years. Students in this orchestra will learn what it means to be a young musician and how to communicate as an ensemble through a variety of technical exercises and repertoire. Students can expect minimal after school activities and a commitment of 3-4 concerts throughout the year. Students are also provided with opportunities to experience live performances by professionals, during and outside of the school day. Much like the Philharmonic Orchestra, the HSCO curriculum is designed so that students can to connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine, and integrate music study into other subject areas.
